Does Michigan require food allergy training?
No, Michigan does not require food allergy training for foodservice professionals. Before 2020, there was an allergen awareness training requirement for food managers. While this requirement is no longer in effect, certified food managers must pass an ANAB-accredited certification exam every five years, many of which include questions regarding food allergies.
Who should be trained in allergen awareness?
Anybody who works with food should be trained in allergen awareness. Although it’s not required by law in the state of Michigan, many individual employers request that team members complete a formal program covering the identification and management of food allergens for customer safety.
