The Retail Food Safety and Compliance Department within the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) does not require food handler training; however, it is still a wise choice for every foodservice professional. Is food handler training required in South Carolina?
Under South Carolina Regulation 61-25, every retail food establishment must have a person in charge (PIC) who holds either a Food Handler Certificate or is a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) during all operating hours. While food handler training is not required for every food handler, having completed such a training may allow you to serve as a person in charge.
