The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) does not formally require foodservice workers to complete a food handler certificate training course; however, some local jurisdictions or employers might require staff to earn a food handler certificate. Completing Trust20’s Food Handler Certificate Training can also prepare you to serve as the Person in Charge (PIC) in your establishment.

Is food handler training required in Tennessee?
According to Tennessee’s Food Service Establishment Rules (Chapter 1200-23-01), which are based on the 2009 FDA Food Code, every retail food establishment must have at least one Person in Charge (PIC) present during all hours of operation. The PIC is responsible for overseeing the operations and ensuring compliance with food safety practices.

While a formal food handler training isn’t explicitly required for everyone on staff, the PIC is also responsible for ensuring that staff are properly trained in food safety. Trust20’s course can help a PIC meet these requirements.
