The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) does not specifically require food workers or managers to obtain a dedicated allergen awareness certificate; however, the department mandates that all department-approved training and certification programs include food allergen information. While a formal food allergy course is not required, this type of training can help prepare managers and staff to confidently serve and protect customers with food allergies.

Is food allergy training required in Texas?
Texas does not require a standalone food allergy awareness certificate. However, the Sergio Lopez Food Allergy Awareness Act (SB 812) mandates that all DSHS-accredited food manager and food handler training programs include food allergy awareness training. This requirement applies to certificates issued or renewed on or after September 1, 2024. Food establishments are also required to post allergen awareness posters.
