When did allergen awareness regulations go into effect in Virginia?
In 2015, the governor signed HB 2090, and training standards addressing food allergy awareness were incorporated into the Virginia Food Regulations. As of June 2023, an establishment’s person in charge must ensure that staff are properly trained in food allergen awareness as it relates to their assigned duties.
Does Virginia require a certificate of completion for allergen training?
No, the VDH does not require managers or staff to obtain a certificate of completion from an allergen awareness training program. However, everyone in a food establishment should have a basic knowledge of allergens, and a certificate of completion from a training course can demonstrate that you and your team are properly trained in food allergy safety.
