The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) does not require managers or staff to complete a formal allergen awareness training program. However, certified food protection managers (CFPMs) are expected to be familiar with the major food allergens and train their staff in food allergy safety as it relates to their duties.

No, the DIAL does not require anyone in the food industry to earn a certificate of completion for allergen awareness training. However, certified food protection managers must be prepared to answer questions about allergen safety during routine health inspections and to teach their staff about the major food allergens.

What are Iowa food workers required to know about food allergens?

CFPMs should ensure their staff are familiar with the “Big Nine” food allergens as defined by the FDA, as well as strategies for preventing cross contact and responding to food allergy emergencies.
