The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) requires that all licensed food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager on staff. This certification is valid for five years and must be obtained through an approved program that meets all federal food safety standards.

Does the state of Pennsylvania require food protection manager certification?

At least one individual with a food manager certification must be present during the operating hours of any foodservice establishment in Pennsylvania. This individual serves as the “Person-in-Charge” (PIC) when on the premises, and their credentials must be prominently displayed for public viewing.

New facilities have 90 days to comply with certification requirements. Certain facilities, including those only handling prepackaged foods or operated by not-for-profit organizations, are exempt.
